 The Team

Tania

An artist and former teacher, Tania is the daughter of a Bolivian who dedicated his life to grains and to improving the lives of his fellow Bolivians. After leaving her country at the age of 13, Tania promised herself to return one day and carry on her father’s work for the betterment of her country and its people. She founded La Yapa™ to merge her father’s passions with her love and dedication to health and education.

Tania is dedicated to bringing greater awareness of the benefits of quinoa to the people of the United States. At the same time, as a former teacher, Tania is very much aware of the importance of education in improving the lives of children. She is a strong believer in making sure all children have access to education, and is committed to making this a reality for the children of quinoa farmers. Through La Yapa, Tania seeks to combine both passions, thereby improving both the health of the people in the U.S. and the lives of quinoa farmers and their children.

Using her training as an interior designer and artist, Tania also hopes to promote Bolivia, its beautiful culture, and one of its greatest treasures, Royal Quinoa®, in the U.S. market.

Sergio “La Yapa Advisor”

A French-Bolivian entrepreneur, Sergio’s goal is to promote the market development of environmentally-friendly enterprises in the Andes. Sergio has worked with small businesses in Latin America for over ten years. During this time, he established his own company, ran a family business and structured investments on behalf of a U.S.-based venture capital fund. Sergio has a B.S. in Political Economy of Natural Resources from the University of California at Berkeley. He is fluent in Spanish, French and English.

Today Sergio is the General Manager of Andean Naturals. The company supplies Royal Quinoa® and quinoa-based ingredients to food manufacturers and wholesalers. Andean Naturals defines itself as a bridge between the quinoa farmers in Bolivia and the U.S. market. To date, the company has provided market access to over 1,000 small family farms.

Following the official release of fair trade guidelines for quinoa by Transfair USA in 2009, Andean Naturals formed a partnership with quinoa farmers and La Yapa. The partnership's goal is to bring to U.S. consumers a Fair Trade Certified™ line of products under the La Yapa brand.

The partnership's long-term mission is to improve the lives of quinoa farmers and the education of their children. It will accomplish this mission by promoting the sustainable production of quinoa, using organic methods and heirloom seeds, just as the farmers in the region have done for the past 4,000 years.
